Choosing Trends With Care

You are a fashion fiend. Style entices; design appeals; and the purpose of this life is to make it as beautiful as possible. You are forever seeking color, pattern and easy texture. The hours are to be expressed through trends — and you can think of no better thrill than celebrating the past, charting the history of fabric on your body. Your friends are all lost to their stale choices and dull denim. But you want instead to reinvent yourself; and the previous decades provide a wealth of possibilities.

Such possibilities are to be used with caution, however.

While indulging in former trends is to be commended, trying to bring those trends back to the public consciousness is not. You must avoid becoming a parody of your own good intentions — something that is all too simple to do.

Too often will individuals assume that they can prove their fashion sense by gathering as many accessories as possible, offering the world a strong look at their clever shopping. This does not work, however. Instead it leaves all persons seeming like they’re trying to revive a decade. The trends that were meant to be classic become obnoxious instead. They are simply too much to take.

It is urged therefore that individuals choose instead to follow the philosophy of moderation. It must be understood that these styles all disappeared for a reason — the times changed; the design sensibility evolved. It is not wise then to drench yourself in the past. All items must instead be carefully selected and used to greater effect. Less is more (and this is a cliche you should remember).

Select one trend for an outfit and use it sparingly. Shoulders pads, knee high socks, poodle skirt flounces: these should be countered with modern looks. Never make them the focus; instead make them the novel accessory. The purpose is to surprise others, not shock them.

Make your style one of wisdom, not excess.
