Shoulder Pad Consideration

It was once the stretch of fabric, the blur of masculine shapes along female shoulders: pads were stuffed beneath cloth, forced to maintain straight lines and confidence. The purpose was to intimidate, to assure that business could be conquered by women (a concept still so tentative in the 1980’s, not yet recognized as true). Suits were offered, obliterating curves and emphasizing power; and the heavy weight of blazers was compensated by vinyl. It created a striking silhouette and an undeniable presence.

Now, however, such a presence is often considered unwanted.

Within the excess of the 80’s, shoulder pads emerged as a way to provide a distinct trend and an even more distinct statement: women used these to change their appearance, altering delicate slopes and replacing them to broad appeal. The intention was to exude strength — and it succeeded. Pads were found throughout the decade, ensuring that all individuals could wear their clothes with determination. It was an idea that appeared unstoppable.

Appearances are deceiving.

Because the years eventually replaced the pad to softer tailoring, lighter fabrics. Women no longer wished to offer themselves as masculine. They realized instead that they could be competent without sacrificing their own sensibilities. Feigning broad shoulders was deemed a waste of time and femininity. And the 1990’s passed, with all traces of the pad virtually removed.

As of 2010, however, it is becoming a presence within the fashion world once more. Designers are utilizing it to create unique shapes and unfamiliar designs. The intention now is not to eliminate the female form; it’s instead to simply accentuate it.

And it does work — in moderation.

When considering shoulder pads individuals must remember one important truth: bigger is not better. These tools work best when they are subtle, meant to follow the natural line of the body. Becoming a tribute to the 1980’s is not the desire. Merely acknowledging its existence is.

Use this trend sparingly to find its value.
