The Flow of Hair

Have you ever noticed that hair styles have a tendency to go outward and inward as the times change? While the causes of this flow of hair might not be obvious, the fact of the matter is that people’s hair styles are wont to change based upon a wide variety of different factors, and many of those factors have very little to do with anything more objective than what everybody else is doing. After all, how many people set trends, and how many of us just sort of follow along with them for as long as we feel comfortable in doing so?

When it comes to hair, there is a tendency to go far out with it every other decade, and then to fade back in close to the head on the next one. If you can recall the long tails and afros of the 60s, you may have noticed that they faded back a bit in the early 70s.  However, the 80s subsequently saw their share of big hair, especially toward the end. Is there really any rhyme or reason to this, considering that it seems there are always some people sporting hair styles bigger than their bodies?

In short, not really. While the 80s was generally a pretty big time for hair, the 90s saw it cropping back in. However, since that point there really has not been a resurgence in the sizes of people’s hair, as it gets to an all time short record as the second decade of the 21st century opens up. Granted, at some point big hair is going to come back. But you would have to have some kind of swami powers to know when that will be.
