The Necessity of Function: Trends

It’s an unexpected bargain, a style you can’t believe — a dress is tucked in the back of a shop, hidden among the aisles of disco revelations and grunge silhouettes. A consignment store is a favored haunt, offering the trends you can’t refuse. This, however, is still a surprise. It’s a garment without equal, stitched to recall the 1970′s. It would be ideal for the event you’ve been planning: that party of costumes and fun.

So you hurry then to try it on, willing it to fit. It… doesn’t. The fabric is tight against your body; the color is unflattering. A dress does not offer any compassion toward your figure. It instead widens your hips and distorts your waist. The effect is unsettling.

You’re certain, however, that no one else would ever have a gown like this. It’s unique. It’s special.

It’s also to be denied.

The desire to purchase the styles of the past is understandable. Letting that desire dominate your good sense, however, is not. Clothes — even those of previous decades — are meant to flatter. They should shield all imperfections and create illusions of easy elegance. Choosing a garment that fails to do this is therefore a mistake.

Trends (no matter how uncommon) must still work within your life. They must offer the proper length, fit and color. Selecting a dress that’s simply different — and subsequently ignoring all of its faults — is a waste of money and time. You can’t just refuse to admit the problems. This will leave you with an awkward appearance and no way to explain it.

All clothes must be of the appropriate size and style. Understand what looks best on your body and seek out trends that follow that. Don’t let yourself be swayed by the uniqueness of an item. This will only lead to poor decisions and a wardrobe that offers no relief.

You have to wear these clothes. Make them therefore wise.
